I have good news. I'm happy to announce that I've had a very positive
conversation with Gustavo Chico. He is already subscribed to freepats
list.
Gustavo is a teacher for computer music on a conservatory here on Spain,
and he is willing to collaborate. He is using free software utilities on
his classrooms, and he wants his students learn by doing useful projects
at the same time, like recording and sampling acoustic instruments which
latter could be turned into soundfonts. He plans to publish the results
of his projects under free licenses.
I think this is a fantastic idea. Students will learn computer music,
but they will probably become interested on the best things of free
software and the community of cooperating users and developers around
the world.
Gustavo asks about missing or incomplete instruments. He says "We may
try to record those instruments in case we have them in the
conservatory". And he adds: "Could we help to build SF2 files by editing
the [currently available] samples?". I've already replied with an "of
course, yes" :-)
I will send another message with an updated summary of the samples that
we have and the missing ones.
